Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is a therapeutic health profession concerned with enhancing mobility and quality of life by using clinical reasoning to deliver the most suitable treatment for an injury or condition.

Physiotherapy works ideally with corrective exercise therapy where a wide range of drug-free techniques are used to relieve pain, restore function and movement whilst preventing further problems.

The Bowskill Clinic has four different physiotherapy modalities:

Manipulative Physiotherapy

Manipulative physiotherapists are highly trained in assessing musculoskeletal disorders. The clinical reasoning processes employed by manipulative physiotherapists enables them to reach a diagnosis consistent with the findings of the clinical examination.  Manipulative Therapy is the skilful restoration of mobility to soft tissues and joints using a variety of massage, mobilisation and manipulative techniques. The precise mobilisation and manipulation of joints is a natural extension of the re-balancing of soft tissue, thus allowing freedom of movement within the joints so facilitating normal function.

Gunn IMS Physiotherapy

Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) is an effective treatment for the relief of both acute and chronic pain. It is based on scientific, neurophysiological principles and treats conditions such as headache, backache, whiplash, tennis elbow and frozen shoulder.

IMS was developed by Dr Chan Gunn who introduced the term "neuropathic pain" to describe pain where there are often no signs of injury of inflammation.   IMS is achieved by inserting fine acupuncture needles into the shortened muscles to stimulate them, which is then followed by relaxation of the muscle bringing pain relief and restoration of movement and function.

Visceral Manipulation

Visceral Manipulation (VM) or "organ specific fascial mobilization" consists of gentle mobilization (including direct stretching) of the viscera (internal organs, blood vessels and nerves) and their connective tissue to encourage normal mobility, tone and tissue motion of these structures. It involves working directly with the organs and their adjacent and supportive tissues to restore their normal mobility and therefore function.

This form of treatment can be suitable for anyone who has undergone abdominal or spinal surgery’s.

Exercise and Manual Physiotherapy

Manual Physiotherapy includes the use of techniques such as mobilisation, soft tissue release and exercise which is clinically directed according to the bespoke presentation of the client. Manual therapy uses many varied hands-on techniques to improve range of motion in restricted joints and to stimulate the function of muscles, nerves, joints, and ligaments.

Treatment and exercises are provided on the back of in depth assessment, evaluation and clinical reasoning which provides the physiotherapist with a structured and evaluative treatment protocol to follow.
